Removing unwanted PMU before a new one
Covering old PMU with new isn't always possible. Here is when removal is needed, how partial removal differs from full removal and how to plan the way from the old shape to the new one.
Why you can't just cover it
New pigment doesn't paint over the old one like paint on a wall. It goes into the same layer of skin and mixes with what's already there. If the old PMU is dark, ginger or grey, the new colour turns out muddy. If the old shape is wider, the new one will be wider too, because the old borders don't go anywhere.
Each new layer also adds density. If a few years later you want to change the shape again, two or three layers will need removing, which means more sessions.
When a cover-up is possible
- the old PMU is very light, almost faded;
- the colour is neutral and doesn't clash with the new one;
- the new shape fully covers the old one and isn't wider than your natural brows.
In every other case it's more honest to remove the excess first. That way the new PMU heals cleanly and lasts predictably.
Full removal, partial removal or lightening
- Partial removal — the shape is mostly fine, but there are extra tails, an uneven lower edge or a blurred outline. We remove only the excess and keep the rest as a base.
- Lightening — the shape is fine, but the colour has changed to grey, blue or ginger. 1–2 sessions make the base light so the new pigment settles cleanly.
- Full removal — the shape is outdated, asymmetric or too wide. We remove everything and build new brows from scratch.
How we choose the method
For dark, grey and blue shades we usually choose the laser, which lightens the whole area evenly. For warm, ginger and skin-tone remnants, and for precise removal of tails, the remover often works better. Sometimes we combine both. More in the article "Laser or remover".
Timeline: from removal to new PMU
| Stage | Timing |
|---|---|
| Consultation and test pulse | 1 visit |
| Laser sessions | 1–4, every 4–6 weeks |
| Remover sessions | 1–3, every 6–8 weeks |
| Break before new PMU | 4–6 weeks after laser, up to 8 weeks after remover |
| New PMU | 2 visits about a month apart |
So from the first visit to new brows usually takes 2 to 6 months. It sounds long, but the result will be clean and stable for years.
The advantage of a full-cycle studio
YouTube Shorts
YouTube ShortsAt ANITA SPACE the same artist does both the removal and the new permanent makeup. So the plan is made from day one: what to remove, which shape to keep, which colour to choose afterwards. You don't need to find two specialists and explain your history twice.
An artist who does PMU herself sees old work differently. She understands how deep the pigment sits, why the colour changed and what it will look like after removal. That helps avoid removing too much and keep what can become the base for the new shape.

How to prepare for the consultation
- come without makeup on the area;
- remember when the PMU was done and whether there were touch-ups or cover-ups;
- bring photos of your brows before the first PMU if you have them;
- think about the shape and colour you'd like — examples help.
Common mistakes
- covering blue tones with an orange corrector — ginger patches appear a year or two later;
- getting new PMU right after removal without waiting for healing;
- removing in one place and doing new PMU in another without a shared plan.
FAQ
Do I have to remove the old PMU completely before a new one?
No. Often it's enough to remove the tails or lighten the base. Full removal is needed when the old shape doesn't work at all.
Can I get the new PMU from another artist?
Of course. But when one artist does both, the plan is aligned from the start and the desired result is easier to reach.
Will the new PMU last as well?
Yes. Once fully healed, the skin takes pigment normally. The key is to wait and not rush.
What if after removal I'd rather keep my natural brows?
That's a great option too. Many clients choose brow care, lamination or tinting instead of new PMU.
Bring photos of your brows before your first PMU to the consultation if you have them. It helps make the new shape look natural.
